This tour was specifically developed to take you through South Africa and visit key areas and attractions that played a critical role in the struggle for equal rights and the birth of the democratic South Africa as we know it today.

Highlights will include visits to Soweto, Vilakazi Street, Nelson Mandela House Museum, Kliptown, Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and Lilies Leaf. Continuing your journey through history in Cape Town, the tour will focus on key areas such as Robben Island, Parliament, City Hall & Grand Parade.

You will certainly leave South Africa with an enriched knowledge of this Historic Icon of Peace and Democracy – Nelson Mandela. Your trip will end with a relaxing visit to the Greater Kruger National Park for a true South African Safari.

In Nelson Mandela’s Footsteps Itinerary

Day 1 Johannesburg (2 nights)
Upon your arrival at O.R Tambo International Airport you will be welcomed by a Great Safaris guide who will escort you to your vehicle, for a private transfer to the hotel.

This afternoon you will be commence a Soweto Tour. Your journey through history will begin with an informative tour through Soweto, the largest black residential area in South Africa.

Highlights of this tour include: a fascinating look at bustling neighborhood life; two Nobel Prize winners previous residences; Nelson Mandela House Museum, Apartheid Museum, the Hector Peterson Memorial, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Kliptown.

Late afternoon you will be returned to your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day 2 Johannesburg
After breakfast, you will depart on an informative city tour of Johannesburg, the biggest city in South Africa, and is also the financial hub of Southern Africa.

Today you will further experience the story of South Africa’s turbulent past and transition to democracy – all part of Nelson Mandela’s journey. You will visit the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and Lilisleaf. After lunch return to the hotel, for an afternoon at leisure.

Day 3 Johannesburg / Cape Town (3 nights)
Following breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Cape Town. Upon arrival you will be met by Great Safaris and escorted to the vehicle and commence your city orientation tour.

Cape Town is one of the world’s most picturesque tourist destinations and most beautiful cities in the world. Your city tour will include a visit to the front of City Hall, where from the balcony on February 11, 1990, only hours after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela made his first public speech. Also close by are the Parliament Buildings and Gardens. The tour will end with a visit to Table Mountain (weather permitting), and then you will be taken to your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day 4 Cape Town
Enjoy breakfast before departing on a half hour boat trip across the bay to Robben Island.

You will be met by your guide, an ex-political prisoner, and will be taken on a 45 minute bus ride with full commentary. You will also visit and learn the history of the infamous Maximum Security Prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years, along with many other political prisoners.

Return by boat and discover the Victoria and Alfred (V & A) Waterfront, the center of the active harbor. View the Nobel Prize Laureate Statues in Nobel Square

Return to your hotel with the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 5 Cape Town
Today you will enjoy a full day Cape Peninsula Tour – highlighting Cape Town and its spectacular surrounds. The tour will travel via the 12 Apostles, Hout Bay and Chapman’s Peak – (one of the region’s most dramatic mountain drives offering amazing panoramic views of the city). Continue on to the Cape of Good Hope, where – the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

Next up is Simon’s Town and a visit to a colony of African Jackass Penguins at Boulders Bay.

Return to the city, visiting Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, before you arrive at your hotel.

Day 6 Cape Town / Kruger Park Private Lodge (3 nights)
This morning transfer to Cape Town Airport for your flights, via Johannesburg, to Kruger Airport, where you will be met and transferred to your selected luxury private lodge, in the greater Kruger Park.

The Sabi Sands Private game Reserve or the Mthetomusha Private Game Reserve.

After lunch, you will have your first game drive and the opportunity for an exceptional wildlife experience, including possible encounters with the prized “Big Five” – the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. Return in the evening for a sumptuous meal at the lodge.

Day 7-8 Kruger Park Private Lodge
For two days you will have exciting morning and afternoon game drives and activities in open safari vehicles guided by an experienced Ranger and assisted by the Tracker.

Day 9 Kruger Park / Johannesburg / Departure
A final game drive, then breakfast and transfer to the airport, for your flight to Johannesburg.

Upon arrival, connect to your onward flight and bid “farewell” to Africa.
